The Director of Operations of an IDEA Public School is the operational right-hand to the school principal, responsible for all matters of school administration that do not directly relate to instruction or student behavior. The Director is a cornerstone of the IDEA school model, which seeks to relieve the principal of non-instructional obligations so that s/he can focus almost exclusively on student achievement and the professional development of the teaching staff.

The position requires an individual who is equally comfortable with and committed to managing a large operational staff as well as making sure the supply room is stocked with pencils. A highly effective Campus Director of Operations is driven by the desire to create smart and efficient systems, enabling others throughout the school to succeed. The Director of Operations reports to the School Principal and is also supervised and supported by the Chief Operations Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES
General:
• Develop systems, procedures and materials to maximize school-site efficiency
• Design and manage significant operational systems and structures for transportation, facilities and maintenance, food services, health services, technology, data management systems, communication, campus security and contingency planning, and office operations
• Problem-solve to quickly mitigate logistical challenges
• Prepare campus for start-up/new school year by doing everything from ordering furniture, equipment, and classroom supplies to ensuring school services (i.e. student food services, student transportation services) are lined up and ready for action
• Facilitate communication and collaboration between the various operations teams on-site
• Facilitate communication and collaboration between the school-site and district business office/operations staff.
• Address personnel issues arising within or between Operation Staff
• Monitor efficiency and effectiveness of school operational systems, using data to continuously improve both processes and products.
• Manage the school’s supply and asset inventory
• Maintain a clean, orderly, efficient and safe school environment.
School Administration
• Oversee the effective implementation of core school operational practices as relate to student and staff attendance tracking, supply requests and fulfillment, student enrollment/discharges, student field trip planning and execution, etc.
• Meet school ADA goals and enrollment.
• Provide oversight of the planning and execution of school special events, such as field lessons, Report Card Night, and graduation.
• With the support of the Achievement First central Data Analysts, disseminate progress reports to school staff and ensure the timely production of student Report Cards
• Ensure that student records are properly maintained and updated at the school.
Management and Leadership
• Directly supervise operational staff such as, but not limited to, the office manager, receptionist, school nurse, and facilities manager.
• Actively serve on the school’s leadership team, which also includes the school’s principal and instructional coaches.
• Participate in the district Operations Leadership Team, which also includes the Chief Operations office and district directors.
Transportation:
• Collaborate with lead bus driver and district transportation managers and director to develop bus routes
• Address serious student behavior issues and parent concerns and provide on-going information to grade team leaders
• Manage transportation requests for co-curricular events
• Investigate and provide lists of transportation options for annual field lessons
• Select bus drivers with transportation managers
• Ensure regular maintenance of campus bus fleet
Facilities:
• Collaborate with Director of Facilities and Construction to ensure regular and on-going maintenance of school property
• Track and communicate the development of school construction
• Address facilities issues with maintenance team
• Manage facility usage requests
• Ensure building is secure and locked daily
• Address personnel issues arising with maintenance team
Food service:
• Coordinate with Child Nutrition Program Directors to ensure timely distribution of food and snacks
• Investigate healthy lunch alternatives within guidelines of Child Nutrition Program
• Select food service leader in conjunction with the district’s Director of Child Nutrition Program Address personnel issues emerging among or between food service workers
• Collaborate with Assistant Director of Child Nutrition to establish student and teacher-led garden
Health Services
• Serve as health advocate for students.
• Ensure parents are notified of accidents or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
• Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
• Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.
• Ensure that the campus nurse reviews and evaluates immunization records.
• Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
Student Recruitment
• Actively recruit low-income future IDEA San Juan students.
• Create a local grassroots advertising campaign.
• Give parent information sessions once a month, create a year long schedule for parent info sessions.
• Enroll a complete class of K, 6, 9, and Pre-K students for the 2010-2011 school year while maintaining necessary numbers of students in current grades to meet budget numbers.
Textbooks
• Order, receive and distribute campus textbooks on an annual basis.
• Track and inventory campus textbooks.
